The Nicholas Project was presented to us by the Medieval Centre in Sandwich, and we thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of bringing this unique project to life.
Constructing an oak frame on the back of a ship presented its own set of challenges, but through extensive planning, careful preparation and close collaboration with the centre, we were able to turn their vision into reality. In fact, they were so pleased with the finished structure that we have since been invited back to complete the forecastle.
We undertook the design and construction of the structure while working closely with our structural engineer and the trustees of the centre. We sourced the timber, prepared and pre-constructed the oak frame before transporting it to the ship, where it was carefully erected in position.
The ultimate aim of the centre was to provide members of the public with access to the ship and an opportunity to experience first-hand how these medieval naval vessels would have been built, operated and used during combat.
It was a truly unique and exciting project, and one that we are incredibly proud to have been involved in.
