A bespoke countryside extension designed around the views
After working with this client on two previous occasions, we were delighted to return for one of our most ambitious projects yet. Following many months of detailed planning and collaboration, we developed an extensive wraparound extension centred around a stunning open-plan oak-framed living space. The result combines traditional craftsmanship with thoughtful modern design, creating a light-filled home that feels perfectly connected to its beautiful countryside surroundings.
The Brief
The homeowners wanted to create additional space while maintaining the traditional character of their property and reflecting the style of the surrounding English countryside. The project incorporated a large two-sided wraparound extension, extending the existing kitchen while introducing a new downstairs WC and generous entrance hall. At the heart of the scheme was a spectacular new oak-framed living area, designed to become a central space for the family to enjoy their home and its views.
The Oak Living Space
The centrepiece of the project is the large, open-vaulted oak living area. A highly detailed king post roof creates a dramatic architectural feature overhead, while the full-height glazed gable end floods the space with natural light and makes the most of the surrounding landscape. Carefully considered oak detailing throughout gives the room a warm, timeless character, while the extensive glazing creates a seamless relationship between the interior and the countryside beyond.
Traditional Materials & Bespoke Details
A key part of the design was ensuring the new extension complemented its traditional setting. The exterior was clad in oak waney-edged boards, giving the extension a natural, handcrafted appearance that sits comfortably within the rural landscape. Two bespoke oak porches were also designed and constructed as part of the project, alongside oak Crittall-style windows and doors. These details bring together the traditional character of the property with the clean lines and generous glazing of the new spaces.
