Designed to be both structurally supportive and sensitive to the original fabric of the building, this project involved the design and installation of an air-dried oak truss frame to support the existing roof while introducing the architectural details our clients wanted for their new family home.
Working within a listed barn and Oast house in the Kent countryside presented a series of complex structural and design challenges, each requiring a considered and sympathetic solution. One of the most unusual aspects of the project was that our new oak frame had to be constructed inside the existing roof, allowing us to support and retain the original structure rather than replace it.
A series of substantial oak trusses were designed to span the building, carrying a full-length ridge and purlin system which supports the existing roof. New oak window trimmers were carefully integrated into the frame to accommodate conservation roof lights, bringing generous amounts of natural light into the newly created vaulted space.
Alongside the main barn, we also designed and constructed a new oak roof over an adjoining structure. This has become an open, vaulted kitchen and dining area, with the exposed oak frame creating a strong sense of height, warmth and character.
The works also included extensive repairs to the existing roof alongside a number of carefully considered new additions, ensuring the historic fabric of the building was preserved while allowing it to function as a modern family home.
The finished barn now provides a substantial countryside home, combining the character and craftsmanship of the original building with a new oak structure designed to support its future. With further plans to extend the family’s ambitions into the surrounding farm buildings, this project forms the beginning of an exciting wider transformation of the site.
